Crape ginger (Costus speciosus) is a perennial tropical evergreen which is native to Malaysia. It produces white showy flowers which emerge from dark red to reddish purple bracts on pinecone-shaped, terminal inflorescences.
The rhizomes of this plant contain saponins and other unidentified alkaloids. If large quantities are ingested, it can irritate the gastrointestinal tract.
