Buckeye (
Aesculus pavia) is a large shrub or small deciduous tree which is native to the southern and eastern parts of the United States. It is commonly planted as an ornamental in landscapes and parks.
The tree produces large clusters of attractive dark red to orange colored tubular flowers in the spring. Red buckeye is one of the first trees to loose it's leaves in the fall. Red buckeye fruits contain large amounts of saponins, alkaloids, and glycosides, which are toxic to chickens if ingested.
